2016, March

THE PROBLEM

During the chapel closing for maintenance work related to the lights system and windows fixtures, it has been planned a maintenance operation for all marble monuments of the chapel. The maintenance intervention was carried out in five days, using scaffolding on wheels, involving temporary protection for all the artifacts during the whole works that would take place in the chapel.

THE METHOD

It has been programmed a treatment to only  remove loose deposits and to implement a visual analysis of the conservation status of the sculptures.

The intervention was carried out on all the monuments except form the major altar and the monument to de Cecco di Sangro which dimensions and location did not allow to work with scaffolding, but that would have required the installation of fixed  and more complex structures.

Have been used materials and equipment which have allowed to go ahead with the removal of the surface deposits without touching more cohesive deposit levels, avoiding the risk of getting into more critical and technical problems of a real cleaning, not prepared for the project and for which there will be not do not even enough time.

Once the intervention was completed, it has been consigned the work documentation along with the analysis of the actual state of the monuments, a document which aim is to create a zero point in order to plan future maintenance.
